Who doesn't know Bjorn Peterson?

Bjorn Performing at Maine  State Jazz Competition

As I mentioned in my blog introduction, I want to feature some local artists.  The artist I have chose for the week is Bjorn Peterson, a resident of Blue Hill and Brooklin, Maine.  Bjorn is an extremely talented violinist, guitarist and bassist. He is currently a senior at George Stevens Academy where he plays in various musical combos and the infamous jazz band.  For those who are unaware of George Stevens Academy’s jazz program, it is one of the best in the state.  The jazz band has been one of the top three jazz bands in the state for over 20 years.  Many students who participate in the jazz program go on to top music schools.

Bjorn is involved with music outside school.  He and his father, Jay, perform as a swing duo.  The famous Father-Son duo performs all over the peninsula from venues such as Barncastle and the Blue Hill Wine Shop to concerts for non-profits such like Nichol’s Day Camps.  Not only are they known locally, but they have performed at festivals in Georgia and Louisiana, making them nationally known.  He also plays with his friends in a band called “The Blanks” for now.  They play anything from ska to blues to jazz.

Even though Bjorn is featured in a contemporary folk album and a country album, he looks for more recording opportunities.  His latest project is recording in his studio with local bands and solo performers, in addition to his very own material.

When I asked Bjorn how he felt about being a Blue Hill Peninsula musician he responded:
"For a location so far from a major urban center it has an incredible amount to offer given its population. Music is valued at a great level from high school on up. When I was digging around looking to see how many musical groups in the area wanted to record and were worth recording, I was astounded.  Another amazing facet is how diverse music is here. We have bands of every age and genre around. It's not centered in any one group of people or style of music.”
Do not miss Bjorn and his father perform in downtown Blue Hill on New Year’s Eve!
