Glass Half Full?

I just arrived in the great state this morning and have already been submerged in the underrated art culture here.  I was invited to an open house hosted by the Weinberg family in the East Blue Hill Village.  Their house featured a collection of glass blown art by their son Zac.   The picture below was my personal favorite of the collection, a sconce, which is shown on his website http://zacweinberg.com/#305508/Sconce-Green You can browse all of his art on this website.

I was intrigued by the designs and the color combinations each piece had.  His younger brother, Dan explained the process of glassblowing.  There is a large blow pipe with the molten glass is at the bottom and the glassblower at the top.  The glassblower blows through the tube to shape the glass molten.  Even though this sounds simple, there are many blowing techniques you must learn in order to achieve the proper thickness and design.

Fortunately, there is an exclusive opportunity to try this interesting form of art in Downeast.  The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine offers workshops not only in glass but in clay, metals, paper and wood.  These workshops are generally two weeks long and do not require any experience but they do offer courses for advanced artists.  Haystack workshops are studio based and taught by internationally known artists.  The campus is located right next to the ocean and it is truly gorgeous.

Unfortunately, I have not had an opportunity to study at Haystack but many of my friends from high school have taken workshops there.  They have all seemed to have an amazing experience.  Some of them were truly inspired and went on to pursue an education in the form of art they learned at Haystack.  If you want to learn more about Haystack or have any questions here is the website: http://www.haystack-mtn.org/about.php Workshop applications are also available on the site.  That’s all for now!
